TOOLS FOR SETTING UP A BLOG/WEBSITE
I have met folks who still believe that setting up a functional website or blog requires you top learn to code first. But that is untrue. As much as i could, i did try to clarify that with tools such as Website Builders and Content Management Systems, you can actually set up a functional website/blog, even with a touch of professionalism. What these tools does are to take care of the tech side of setting up the website which comprises of the code, and present you with a User Interface that consist of input fields and settings which allows you to configure the site to your taste/need.
Setting up a functional website has become as easy as filling forms and customizing with ready-made tools without having more technical skills than is needed to surf the web. You may not grasp the whole stuffs at a scoop, and you shouldn’t expect to either……But with time, you will discover that you have them at your finger tips.
So, let’s consider some of these tools to setting up a website or blog in the order in which they come.
Naming your Blog (Domain Name)
One of the first things you do when starting out as a blogger is to choose a name for your blog/site. To some, this is no task at all, as they already have a name ready. But to others, settling for a particular domain name could proof to be a herculean task. If you fall under the later category, don’t fidget because you’ve got some company and a help-meet too.
Let me therefore suggest some online tools that can be handy in deciding a domain name for your new business site or hobby blog…….whatever the case.
- Lean Domain Search
Lean Domain Search gives you thousands of options for every keyword you search for. Simply enter a word that you would like to be included in your domain name, and you will be surprised with a permutation of hundreds to thousand of option relating to your query.
I searched for a keyword “entrepreneur”, and got nearly 3000 options. That is pretty cool, right? You can now pick one among the suggestions and check for its availability at the right hand side of the table. In my case, i pcked up “Entrepreneurscreation.com” and lo, it was available. It will even give you the popularity index of the query you entered.
- Name Mesh
Name Mesh is also a great tool for searching for available domain name. Once you enter a query and clicked on ‘Generate’, you should be able to see list of similar domains. The results for clicking on one of the suggested domains shows you its availability including its social availability (Facebook, Twitter).
Choosing A Website Builder
There are many website builders out there with which you can get your website/blog up and running within few minutes. These website builders serve as the primary container for your blog content until you are able to export it to an external host. The extent to which you are able to get your blog fully functional and equipped is dependent on these site builders. Whatever features they seldom provide will not be available for you to deploy on your blog/website. Hence the need to choose the one right for you.
Some site builders include Tumblr, Webs.com, Weebly, WordPress, Blogspot(aka Blogger), etc. But the purpose of this article is to help you choose the one that best serve your need.
I would suggest you choose between Blogger and WordPress. But before choosing either of the two, you may want to state the purpose of your blog/site; whether your are creating a blog to share your personal interest/hobby or you are setting up a business blog full-fledged.
Blogger is owned and controlled by google. Your right to your content are limited compared to WordPress and violation of their policies may have your account suspended. However, Blogger is easier to acquaint with compared to WordPress and requires less technical skills in setting it up.So, if you are looking to get your new blog up and running with the least hassle, Blogger may be a viable option. It however, does not provide much features as does WordPress. But you can still move your content over to WordPress as soon as you master the basics of Blogger and are ready to handle WordPress.
WordPress is the world’s largest CMS consisting of about 22.5% of the total websites in the world wide web. It have since evolved from a mere CMS to a professional site builder and even provides platform for building and integrating web apps. It currently has over 31,000 plugins and over 26,000 themes available for use free.
This gives you multiple choices and flexibility. It is easy to use, though not as easy as Blogger. It is also free to use, but you may consider buying a domain name and paying for hosting. It is safe and secure and readily provides you with high standard security. You can always upgrade to a higher standard…..if you choose to.
Wordpress is cross-platforms-friendly; much to say that it is highly responsive. It can adapt to the screen size of any device (mobile, tablet or desktop). It was developed with clean and standard code making it web-crawler optimized. This is to say that it was developed with SEO in mind……
But WordPress exists in two categories : Wordpres.com and wordpress.org. The former is less technical than the later. With wordpress.com, you can start with a free domain name like myblog.wordpress.com while with wordpress.org, you start with a self hosted domain name like myblog.com. You can start with wordpress.com and when you are ready, buy a domain name and hosting.
SO, if you are simply set to start hobby blogging, you amy consider blogger.com but if you want to build your brand and authority and ultimately make some cash, please consider wordpress.com…..it is just
easy right for you.
Domain Name And Hosting.
Some guys do get confused about the different between Domain name and Domain hosting. Let me throw up an illustration to differentiate the duo.
In a brick-and-mortar business, you have your business name which you wish to register with the CAC so as to obtain the legal right to use the name. That name remains your IP and no-one else is allowed to use it. That is Domain Name.
Ok. You now have your business name but you need to rent a space to display your goods or services so that buyers/clients can come looking for you there. Then you saw an outlet and rents it for a year, two years, 6 months…etc. That is Domain Hosting. What domain hosting companies does is to store your Content in their live server and display them to people when they type in your URL or to google when they type in a query that has your site as a potential source that can answer their query.
Now, enough of the ranting!!!
When it comes to choosing among domain and hosting Registrars, various factors are taken into consideration such as online support, security and privacy, available tools for account management, pricing, loading speed. Also, don’t be tempted to use the same provider for both domain name and registrar. Avoiding shared-hosting is crucial.
Some domain registrars and hosting companies include, Godaddy, Whogohost, 101domain, Bluehost, NameCheap, Siteground, etc.
Amongst the Domain Registrars, Godady and Namecheap seem to stand out. However, i recoomend Namecheap over Godaddy considering the above yardsticks. More so, if your domain expires before you were able to renew it, Godaddy may hold it for as long as 80 days even after you may have renewed it but Namecheap could do that for a maximum of 40 days or less. And if by any means you defaulted on payment, Godaddy may delete your server and to get it back, you may have to pay more than you owed them.
Among the hosting companies, consider Siteground and Bluehost. The two hosting providers have been fierce fighters over wordpress hosting solutions. According to a report by Alexandra Leslie, after a careful analysis, the two seem to do well in VPS and dedicated server customers. However, Siteground seem to outscore Bluehost with rating of 5.0 to 4.9 respectively. You can read her full report here.
SO friend, with your new blog/website having its domain name regisered by Namecheap and hosted by Siteground, you are as good as ready to rock-n-roll.
Checking Your site, Account And Email Security.
The web is one the most common places where your security is either compromised or breached. If you aren’t careful enough, you may loose your site property to someone who did not work for it and you go on gnashing your teeth until you’ve got none left. So, making sure your accounts are safe is crucial. To do so, we recommend a tool called Haveibeenpwned (a funny name, i know you are wondering!) . Just log onto Haveibeenpwned.com, type in the input field, the account you wish to verify its security status.
If there had been failed multiple log in attempt, you will be notified. If otherwise, you will be notified too, but of your account safety.
